You’ve always been the strong one — but at what cost?

You’re dependable. Hardworking. The one everyone turns to for support. On the outside, you look “high-functioning.”
But inside? You might feel exhausted, disconnected, or unsure of who you are outside all the roles you’ve had to play.
Maybe you:
-
Struggle to say no without guilt
-
Carry the emotional weight of others
-
Find yourself shrinking or staying small — even now, as an adult
-
Shut down emotionally or feel like a younger version of yourself takes over — and you’re not sure why

If any of this resonates, you’re not alone.

Many first-generation people of color — especially Millennials and Gen Xers — grew up in homes where emotional needs weren’t seen, named, or supported.
Survival often meant being strong, quiet, and self-reliant. Therapy offers a space to gently untangle those patterns.
To reconnect with your Self.
To care for the parts of you shaped by early survival
and to begin living from a place of clarity, choice, and compassion — not just coping.
What therapy looks like at Vida Balance Counseling
-
We focus on healing in a way that honors your culture, background, and identity. A place that respects your story, your culture, and who you are.

-
We’ll gently explore the parts of you that didn’t get what they needed growing up. That might look like tending to the child in you who still feels unseen, unprotected, or responsible for too much.

-
I’ll help you reconnect with your body and emotions. Many of us learned to shut down just to get through—here, you’ll practice listening to what your body is telling you when words don’t come easily.

-
You’ll learn how to set boundaries that feel good and stick. We’ll talk about what healthy relationships actually look like, and how to protect your peace without guilt.

-
We’ll look at how your earliest relationships shaped your patterns today. Whether it’s trust, closeness, or needing to keep people at a distance, we’ll explore where it comes from and what feels different now.

-
You’ll get to know the different parts of yourself—especially the ones that feel in conflict. We’ll work toward helping those parts feel more seen, heard, and in harmony with each other.

-
We’ll talk about what trauma actually does to your mind, body, and relationships. The more you understand your responses, the more compassion and control you’ll have moving forward.

-
This is a space where your voice matters. My role is to support your growth, not tell you what to do. You’ll start building trust in your own choices and wisdom.

-
We’ll practice speaking up for yourself in ways that feel natural, not forced. Especially if you’ve been raised to stay quiet, people-please, or avoid conflict—we’ll build those muscles gently, together.
**Although I specialize in supporting first-generation people of color navigating the lasting effects of childhood trauma, I welcome anyone seeking a supportive, trauma-informed space to heal. Your background doesn’t need to match my specialty for us to do meaningful work together.
